Yokohama Championship Karting Series Race #3.
TAG Masters (25 kart field).

Team MMI Drivers Jim Ferguson and Brian Ferrario finished the third race of the Yokohama Championship Karting Series on top of the podium with fantastic drives off the front of a 25 kart field. Jim Ferguson was on fire all day, setting quick lap in qualifying to take the pole. He drove off the front in the pre-final to set himself up to start on pole for the main. After qualifying 2nd. Hernan Camporini had a mishap in the prefinal that put him at the back of the grid for the prefinal. In the final, he worked his way through the field with his crowd-pleasing and infamous “throw it into the corner” driving style, picking off multiple karts every lap to work up into the top 10 before another incident ended his progress and put him out of the main. Brian Ferrario qualified 4th and moved up a spot to 3rd in the pre-final to put him 3rd at the start of the main. Ferguson was challenged early on in the main by the second-place driver who subsequently broke his chain trying to chase Ferguson down through Tic-Tac-Toe by taking a straighter line through the uphill reverse sprint track layout on the second bump of the famous chicane. The move put him out of the race and eliminated any challenge to Ferguson’s blazing speed. Ferrario held off a flurry of quick starters and the chaos in turn 1 to start his solid drive to hold onto his spot for the 15-lap main. Ferrario was challenged early on with several dive-bomb pass attempts (as attested by the black tire donuts up and down both sides of his side pods), but held off the field and soon opened up a healthy gap. Ferrario held the gap with the first- and second-place karts off the front and slowly increased his lead on the rest of the field. Ferrario said a quick thank you when he saw the second-place kart on the side of the track with a mechanical and crossed the line with a smile to take his highest podium spot ever.

It was an amazing weekend for the entire Team MMI crew that showed up to watch, support and wrench on the Team MMI Rocket Karts. Special thanks to Tad Funakoshi and Scotty Conway for the “above-and-beyond the call of duty” wrenching – they put a lot of work into changing Ferrario’s kart setup to make it ride on rails the entire day – what a difference their knowledge made in transforming a car that was a handful to drive into an intuitive point-and-shoot dream machine.
