March 23, 2003:
After coming off a successful season as the youngest karting Super Nationals Formula S1 Champion, Tad Funakoshi contended the USAC Russell series at Infineon Raceway. In his formula debut, the Shift Management Inc driver qualified pole, fourth tenths ahead of the off pole position.
The day started as a cloud-covered day with rain forecasted throughout the weekend. But a break in the weather gave Funakoshi the chance to run his qualifying run on a dry track. With the pole position in hand, the young 16-year old driver knew that his work was cut out for him. Funakoshi, the youngest in the field of drivers would have to compete against veterans with much more experience. Tad would have to muster all his karting experience to give him the edge he needed. To add to the pressure, the track conditions were ever changing as partial cloud cover made the track conditions even more unpredictable.
At the start of the race, Funakoshi set the pace of the opening lap. When the pace car pulled off the track, his only goal was to get through turn one with no contact. As the green flag dropped, the young Californian had taken a half car length lead. Funakoshi continued his pursuit to distance himself from the second place car. By mid-race, Tad had a four second lead. Funakoshi lead the race from flag to flag ending his first formula race on top of the podium.
